Crescent City Harbor

"The only beach city north of Santa Cruz up through the Oregon border".

Crescent City, California embodies the untamed wilderness that originally brought settlers to the West. Located on the Northern California coast just twenty miles south of the Oregon border, this town has a way of making you feel you've been transported to quite another time. Because it is here that you will find Redwood National and State Parks, with some of the tallest trees in the world. These old-growth coastal redwoods grow to over three hundred feet tall and may live for two thousand years or more.

Beneath these behemoths grow varying heights of hemlock, spruce and fir, which in turn provide a canopy under which ferns and berry bushes thrive. Standing in this unspoiled territory, outdoorsmen find themselves in an amazing world of contrast, where single drops of dew meander down fingers of moss and fern growing off of a tree the size of a cruise ship Don't be surprised if you find yourself feeling more American than you've ever felt in your life, proud of the natural beauty of this great land. And, nestled beneath this magnificent display, feeling a strong sense of kinship with the rugged explorers who first settled this land. Crescent City Lighthouse

Three California state parks and the National Park Service work together to maintain this environment, and in this area alone, their efforts foster forty-five percent of all old-growth redwood remaining in California. These sites have been named a World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve. These two designations literally mean that the natural resources here are "irreplaceable" Because of this, the forests are under local, state, federal and international protection.

But it is this protection that provides residents here with an unparalleled recreation and leisure opportunities. Locals can hike and camp in Prairie Creek, Del Norte Coast, or Jedediah Smith State Parks or the Redwood National Park. Just outside of Crescent City proper, Del Norte County offers the pounding Pacific Ocean and Smith River National Recreation Area which contains the state's largest wild river system.

This beautiful natural backdrop attracts tourists year round, providing a strong influx into the local economy, and the second largest employment opportunity. The largest employers here are the local, state and federal governments. Ironically, it was the logging industry that was initially responsible for providing employment in the region. And it is precisely because of the more recent logging operations that the forests have come under protection, thereby making the governments and park services the largest employers in the region. So it's safe to say that it is ultimately the trees that have, and continue, to provide for folks here.

Crescent City contains a population of only about 7,319 residents. County wide, the population increases to about 26,000 and encompasses an impressive 1,003 square miles. Summer coastal temperatures remain a breezy 60 to 70 degrees, with an annual rainfall of about 75 inches.
