Point Loma

Point Loma is an established, charming community within San Diego, California and is known for its stunning water views. Point Loma is nestled 7-10 miles northwest of the main portion of the city of San Diego. The community is woven along Point Loma Peninsula that stretches south around the entrance of the San Diego Bay across Mission Bay within view of Sea World just west of Old Town San Diego. Like many of California's names, Point Loma originates from the Spanish language. Loma is the Spanish word for "hill" appropriately named because it is a town of rolling hills.

Neighborhoods within Point Loma all enjoy a fabulous warm year round climate and include the Midway District, Ocean Beach, Point Loma Heights, Loma Portal, Central Loma, Sunset Cliffs, Fleetridge, Roseville, The Village, Roseville Heights, Silvergate, Woods, Cottage Area, Wooded Area, Shelter Island and La Playa. Upscale areas include Sunset Cliffs, Silvergate and La Playa. Shelter Island is a man made peninsula inside San Diego Bay and home of the San Diego Yacht Club, several marinas, hotels and restaurants. The total population of Point Loma is approximately 4,623 residents.

A gentle ridge about 50 feet high runs down the middle for most of the peninsula's length. East of the ridge line many homes with stunning views of the bay and skyline. West of it, the homes have jaw-dropping views of the Pacific Ocean. The commercial section of Point Loma is primarily on the east of the main street named Rosecrans and is dotted with hotels, restaurants and stores. The residential section, to the west of Rosecrans, includes large, older homes. Most of Point Loma's homes were constructed between 1950 and 1980.

Old-fashioned lampposts decorate the streets. The ambiance suggests a quieter, more genteel era. But there's a lot of the modern here as well, many homes have been remodeled so exterior charm and modern convenience are found blended together. Average list price for a 4-bedroom begins at $667,000, for a 3-bedroom home the average starts at $441,000. Views cost more, as well as a house out of the flight path...the noise from jets taking off at the San Diego Airport is common in the north sector.

Much of the history of San Diego is tied to this region. In 1542, the explorer Juan Cabrillo entered San Diego Bay, stayed for a few days, then sailed up the coast. He was the first European to arrive on the west coast of the United States. Here in Point Loma is the Cabrillo National Monument and Visitors Center honoring his place in history. The views from the Visitor Center are splendid. From there you can see the entire harbor, including the North Island Naval Air Station (the birthplace of naval aviation), San Diego, Coronado, and out to the open sea.

The Old Point Loma Lighthouse is the centerpiece of Cabrillo National Monument today. The lighthouse was in operation from 1855 to 1891. Standing 422 feet above sea level, its design did not take into account fog and weather conditions common to the region. Many times ships could not see its beacon. So a new lighthouse was erected down the hill closer to the water. Other attractions and activities in the area include, strolling along the Bayside Trail, watching annual whale migrations at Whale Overlook, tidal pools, sailing, surfing, sunbathing and exploring the Military Historical Exhibit.

The Annual Cabrillo Festival is held each year on the weekend closest to September 28, commemorating the arrival of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in San Diego. Cultural dances, food, and re-enactment of Cabrillo's landing are all part of the festival activities. The third weekend in January is celebrated as Whale Watch Weekend. Activities include special programs about marine life, assistance by park rangers in spotting whales, and entertainment. Point Loma is home to a large Portuguese community that holds one of San Diego's oldest festivals here in June.

Children within the Point Loma area are educated by the San Diego Unified School District. The district serves over 140,000 students throughout San Diego and offers an outstanding educational experience. For higher education Point Loma Nazarene University is located in Point Loma. This is a 4-year private college with Bachelor, Master and Post-Master programs. There is also San Diego State University, University of California San Diego and many community colleges nearby.
